King’s Birthday Public Holiday

King’s Birthday Public Holiday on 2 June: What Employers Need to Know

The King’s Birthday public holiday is coming up on 2 June 2025, and if you employ staff, it’s important to know your key responsibilities.

Here’s a simple guide to help you manage public holiday pay and entitlements smoothly.

Employers must consider:

·         on which day the public holiday will be observed for each employee, if it’s a public holiday that might be Mondayised

·         whether or not the day is an otherwise working day for the employee

·         whether or not the employee will be working on the day

·         how much the employee will be paid for the day

·         whether the employee is entitled to an alternative holiday

Payment for working on a public holiday

For working on a public holiday (regardless of whether it’s an otherwise working day for the employee), the employee must be paid at least time and a half for the time actually worked on the day.

Working on a public holiday that is an otherwise working day

If an employee works on a public holiday and it is an otherwise working day for them, they also get an alternative holiday.

This does not apply to employees only employed to work on public holidays.

Mondayised

Sometimes, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday and the employee does not usually work on those days, the public holiday is Mondayised.

Note: There are further rules for employees who work on an “on-call” basis over public holidays.
